Mr Devries graduated in Law and Psychology from Melbourne University in 1969. He subsequently obtained a LittB from the University of New England and an MA from the University of Melbourne, both part time.
He worked as a psychologist until 1972, followed by employment by the Commonwealth Government providing advice on Industrial relations issues, developments and disputes until 1974. Between 1974 and 1981 he was engaged by the SECV, as it then was, as an industrial advocate.

He came to the Bar in 1982. Whilst he started with a fairly broad and general practice, he has principally practised in Family Law, more particularly in the last 30 years or so. He also accepts briefs in various other areas of the Law.

He has appeared in Appeals in the Court of Appeal and the Full Court of the Family Court, trials in the Supreme Court, Family Court, Federal Circuit Court, County Court, various Industrial Tribunals, VCAT, Magistrates Courts and other Courts and Tribunals and in Mediations and other forms of Alternate Dispute Resolution in various jurisdictions.  

He is an accredited Mediator and has conducted a considerable number of Mediations, in Family Law and other areas of the Law.

He has instructed at the Leo Cussen Institute, tutored at the University of Melbourne and presented a number of papers on such topics as Advocates’ Immunity, Binding Financial Agreements and Drafting Family Law Documents.
